What led you to enroll in Ironhack?

I was getting very fed up at my job. I was working in management consulting - of all the exciting things- and just hating every second of it! I decided that I wanted a career change, but needed something that would put me in a career for the rest of my life.

I wanted something that was interesting, with different people. I’d worked for a technology firm before and had really enjoyed working with them, so I thought maybe web development or software development would be the way to go and, in the end, I found Ironhack!

Did you have any difficulties with learning during the Bootcamp, and (if so) how did you get over them?

I think in about Week 3, I hit a bit of a wall and I thought “Oh God, do I really want to do this? It’s really difficult; everybody else seems to be progressing at a much faster rate than I am…” – and I just had a bit of a panic attack, I guess.

We were doing some pretty complex Javascript at that time, I think, and I couldn’t get this little project that we were working on to work, and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong either! But then one of the teachers kind of sat me down and said “Tell me everything!” and, from there. I unburdened myself and went back the next day thinking “It’s going to be OK!”

And then I started noticing that everybody else was going through the same thing at different times during the bootcamp. That meant a lot: realizing that I wasn’t the only one. It was just more about getting my head back into the right space to learn and to be receptive to the teachers and the other students who were all trying to help. There’s a lot of support from the Ironhack team

Overall, how did you find the experience?

I found it really fun being in Barcelona. I stayed in a flat with four other Ironhack students and I really loved it. It’s a good chance to get away and really immerse yourself in something. Towards the middle and the end of the course, we were even organizing our own demonstrations or workshops by ourselves at the weekends as well!

What sort of things kept you motivated during your time at Ironhack?

For me, the thing that kept me most motivated was the fact that I had my heart set on a change of career. Throughout the entire bootcamp, I was just thinking: “I want to get the job that I want”. Fortunately, that’s what happened.

How did being at Ironhack help you land your current role??

During the course, Xavi and some of the other organizers would ask us about our goals for the course. In my case, I didn’t mind front-end, back-end or the whole lot but I know I wanted to be based in Southern France! The Ironhack team then went through their contact list, found a group of startups based in Montpelier and came back to me with their details.

I actually contacted a few of them and had a couple of interviews over Skype during the course. Then, when I got back home (to Montpelier) after the course had finished, I was asked to come in for an interview at Voxtok. A couple of days later, they asked me when I could start!

What would you say are the initial steps for somebody who wants to learn to code?

When you think about it, if somebody is interested in learning to code, it’s very easy to pick up the absolute basics of how HTML goes together. From there, once you’ve got that basic knowledge, with a good teacher, you can build on it easily.

If you’re in a place where you’re still weighing up the pros and cons of going into development on a serious level, I would say find a good teacher or a bootcamp – like Ironhack – or a course that can really challenge you. From there, everything is open to you.

Who would you recommend to Ironhack?

I would personally recommend Ironhack for anybody who wants to really launch a career in web development. I say web development specifically because that’s what I did, but I know Ironhack also offers iOS courses. For anybody who really wants a solid foundation for launching a career in development as an employee, or within a startup or as a freelancer, Ironhack is a really great starting block for that.
